At this time there were but two or three families at the Falls. One was a Mr. McKenzie (McGinnis?) who kept a hotel. He came out just as I got there and I asked him the way to Uncle’s. He said it was five miles to the place and I better stay with him all night. He said he was going to the river to get some fish for breakfast and asked me to go along. I said if it was not too far. He said it was but a few steps, so we went down to the Little Cannon River just below the Falls and caught fish so fast that I didn’t feel tired at all. In a few minutes he had a dozen or more and we went back to the house. I didn’t see or pass a team or man anywhere between Red Wing and Cannon Falls.
