In the year of ’51 the Cleveland, Akron, and Columbus Railroad commenced to be built and in August father sent me with the team to work on the railroad. Those days we had to work from sunrise to sundown for a days work and I got $2.50 for a days work with a team (of horses or oxen). They were expecting 12 teams the first day and I was the only one that got there. I had a short haul and I had to handle the end of the dump boards. That was the longest and tiredest day I ever saw. I was in my thirteenth year then. I went back the next day and stayed for two months, then father took the team and I went to school.
